On December 10, 1988, forty-eight (48) members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. pledged their commitment to the chartering of the Arlington Alumnae Chapter. The Chapter’s membership has increased to over 150. Scholarship, Service and Sisterhood has continued to be the primary focus of the Chapter. With over twenty-two years of existence the Arlington Alumnae Chapter has maintained a presence in the community. The Chapter has served as hostess at the Martin Luther King Jr. annual celebration, and presented awards to the first black Mayor and Police Chief of Arlington. Food and monetary donations have been made to Mission Arlington, Arlington Charities, and Arlington Night Shelter. Voter Registration drives are held prior to elections. Visits have been made to nursing homes where members play games and provide entertainment to the patients. Chapter members implemented the School America Program whereby members went to area schools to read to students, and also sponsored a workshop on Preparing Our Sons for Manhood. Currently Arlington Alumnae Chapter is hosting mentoring groups such as Delta Academy, Delta GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) and EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) Programs focusing on young adults ranging from the ages of 11 – 18 in local schools. The Chapter’s outreach extends internationally. We have provided support to church groups doing mission work in Africa and shoes to the children of HIV parents in Jamaica.
We are continuing to show our support for education through participation in the March in Austin standing against injustice of the educational budget cuts. Educating and encouraging women of all ages to get screened for Breast Cancer. Over the years we have contributed in excess of $100,000 to graduating high school seniors in Arlington and Grand Prairie. In addition, we will continue to provide scholarships to assist students in furthering their education. The Arlington Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will continue to strive and make a difference in the community in which we live and serve.
